Our neighbors had keys to our house growing up, HOWEVER, they did not offer themselves as key holder when they were new to the neighborhood (and would not have if we had been new to the neighborhood), because what the fuck? "Please, give us a key! We barely know you! We promise we won't steal your stuff!"
