1. College isn’t for getting paid more. If you want to make money, go to trade school.

I had a friend that worked for the BMW Spartenburg plant for several years. He said most people there were very happy so the union had nothing to “sell” them. They were paid well, managed well, and it was a clean/orderly environment to work in.

My guess is the workers there are pretty happy on the whole, and the UAW has been trying to convince them that they are getting screwed. I see the UAW as a sleazy politician who promises the world if you’ll only vote for them, then hikes taxes like crazy while re-branding pre-existing benefits programs as their own…

Or perhaps the VW employees see that they aren’t producing knock-out products and don’t want to put their employer out of competitiveness. not to mention per M.C. Perry A, most of these places are competitive for fear of the complication a union brings to all involved.

I’d say that the companies proactively decided to provide better-than-average pay and benefits to forestall the union. UAW bennies without a union, basically. It’s fine until the UAW doesn’t have the same level of influence that it used to

Mercedes, Toyota, BMW, and Nissan have all resisted attempts to unionize their plants in the South, aided by anti-union right-to-work laws.

I actually sympathize with their motives, but their objections come from a very human failing, to wit: in the human heart, one poignant anecdote (however weak the causal link) can tower over mountains of hard data from trained scientists and medical officials who have spent years studying the facts.

Pedantic fact: the current VC-25s used for as Air Force One are not 747-400s but are 747-200s upgrades to the -400’s avionics and engines. Note the size of the hump on top - much smaller than the -400.

I thought this was pretty great. Also, I do feel she was probably met with a lot of hostility or at the very least, indifference.

Anyone who gives advice about such matters without inquiring about state/locality is at best in error.
