IIRC the current Samsung fab isn’t making current gen chips and was built as a memory fab originally. (Also I was wrong it’s just a HQ in Austin for TSMC).

Intel’s 10nm has been “coming soon” for years now and the yield is still low. I’ll believe they have it sorted when I see some volume production.

Interesting tidbit, but Intel’s 10nm process is actually smaller than TSMC’s 7nm.

To be fair, the WI foxconn thing was not a fab, but an assembly plant.  Low value work, generally.

Samsung already has a massive fab in Austin. The plant would just be a new building for 5nm production.

I can assure you that the parts of Europe that are as lightly populated as the middle of the US generally have fairly crappy public transportation too - and public transit in Europe is not all that cheap as a rule. I had a (superb) physics professor who didn’t wear a watch. Instead, he gave us three cigarettes’ worth of lecture. When three filters were neatly lined up at the corner of the desk, he’d wind things up, assign some homework, and send us on our way.

FWIW TSMC did decide to move forward with the Fab, just in Arizona instead of Nevada. The real question is if this ends up becoming a functional fab or like Wisconsin’s Foxconn disaster, which was Trump’s other flirtation with Taiwan.

About a year ago when the Trump administration was pressing TSMC to open a foundry in Nevada, the prevailing concern in Taiwan was the US’s propensity for big policy swings every time a new administration comes in. It’s a worry even for stuff that should be apolitical.

Time to officially recognize Taiwan as a country. Fuck China. No, really, the best ways to stop China are to recognize Taiwan and join the TPP/CTPP. Taiwan doesn’t have to recognize shit from countries that don’t recognize them.
