When the first announced this movie it really seemed like they were crazy. Considering Detective Pikachu had been a relatively minor spin-off that had (at the time) only been released in Japan made it really hard to understand why they would go this direction.

Adapting Detective Pikachu was a brilliant move for the live-action Pokémon outing. The fact that it’s a relatively obscure spin-off rather than something nearly every fan is intimately familiar with helps them be more flexible, as Justice Smith and others have noted. He’s actually not. Polygon and IGN also gave it pretty glowing reviews, and even sites like The Verge, The Guardian, Nerdist, and Total Film gave it positive scores. It seems like if you're a fan of video games the movie is amazing and if you're a casual or non-fan it's enjoyable. Considering the garbo we've gotten

I’m seeing about 50/50 good and bad reviews so far, but for the most part the bad ones are only sort of bad, and the good ones are good to great.

A beloved game franchise gone CG/realistic for the first time in movie form, ACTUALLY staying true to the source material and is good in structure?
