Ugh.
Ugh.
Damn, I am really falling for this show. It's so funny and cruel and melancholic. This was the best episode yet.
I really got into Joanna Newsom this year, and although I think all of Ys is fantastic, "Only Skin" has got to be one of the best pieces of music I've heard all year.
Definitely agree of Enlightened (and all the others). Todd Haynes directed "All I Ever Wanted" for the second season and I feel, without doubt, that it was one of the most beautiful episodes of television that I have ever seen. The shot of Levi and Amy standing on the road, or Helen comforting Amy as she cries were…
…stains the mountain tops.
I think what I like best about the show is how contemplative and quiet it was, and remained, throughout its first season. There were splashy moments and rumbles of violence, but the stillness of each scene really struck me. Fucking beautiful stuff.
So The Fall isn't gonna be on the list then?
It just feels like Mom and Dad trying to show that they're cool by including music that 'the kids' listen to these days.
I liked Foxygen's album, and it just missed my top 10, but "San Francisco" has got to be one of the best tracks of the year. It's so quaint and pretty - it reminds me of a Wes Anderson film.
1. Julia Holter - Loud City Song
2. Mutual Benefit - Love's Crushing Diamond
3. Kanye West - Yeezus
4. Arcade Fire - Reflektor
5. Chvrches - The Bones of What You Believe
6. Haim - Days Are Gone
7. Julianna Barwick - Nepenthe
8. Grouper - The Man Who Died in his Boat
9. Youth Lagoon - Wondrous Bughouse
10. Julia Brown - to be…
I honestly loved it. There seems to be an even split on the site between those that loved it and those that hated it, but the slow burn and gentle rhythm was really up my alley. The cinematography and sweeping shots and sense of something rotten occurring under the surface really stuck with me.
I can just feel it that DVDs are the new and exciting platform that will reinvent Netflix!
That is…actually a freakishly accurate list of the five best shows of the year.
One of the things that I really like about the show going into its second season is that it would be so much harder for everything to go off the rails. Homeland's plot could basically only sustain one season, but The Americans has such a slow burn and such great relationships and foundations to explore that it just…
It's Enlightened for me. Perfectly constructed eight episodes of television that examined the core of a group of complex and troubled characters. Seriously phenomenal season of television.
"Gravity Falls" has actually been surprisingly deft at creating a dense mythology and a really fun over-arching plot. It's created a world in such a short amount of time and a huge bench of supporting players with each character having a great, unique personality.
It's a shame this show is creating almost no buzz. The cast is almost exclusively women, features a wide variety of races and is really funny.
Nosferatu!
Yes.
I'll get Seth Marfalane, stat!
