Large fans spinning slowly don’t generate as much noise as small fans that you find on 1U / 2U servers. Those look like cooling fans for the radiator. Doubt they make that much noise.

There is a solution to prevent 24B from peering at your laptop screen that doesn’t involve replacing your laptop. Granted, it opens up a whole load of other issues, such as 24B choking on his pretzels from the laughing.
The backlash against Google Glass was because it appears like some sort of elitist product that not everyone can buy (in the beginning), and the worry that the other person is recording creepshots. There is little fear that someone will try to wear this while walking around in public.
I’ve thought about using Oculus Rift to create a virtual ultra wide desktop, but yeah, it does seem pretty dystopian if everyone in the office is wearing one. Especially if you have a manager who’s switching randomly among their feeds to make sure they’re working and not, say, commenting on Gizmodo :)
