Out of the movies nominated in their given years, I would have given the award to Roma and would give it to Parasite this year, but I do feel each countries awards should reflect that particular countries film culture. Yeah, this idea seem to go directly at the idea that White is the default in Western Civilization and that Westerners of Color are somehow not heirs or part of its culture because of its European roots. In that way it is kind of really clever.
I feel like it should be point out that author of the Count of Monte Cristo is not white. Alexandre Dumas was the son of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas who was born in Haiti (than Saint-Domingue) and was mixed race.

That scene with Josephine Poszywak Hoffa in her car frozen over turn the key is masterful. I could see there being pressure to cut that down because it is not strictly necessary and it needs room to breath but it was worth it.
