these policies are really wishes rooted in magical thinking—the idea if we get back to “normal” as quickly as possible, the pesky coronavirus problem will be solved.

Dook basketball, and K especially, IS abusive. I went to UNC, so I’m not impartial at all, but over the years I’ve heard horror stories of him screaming at players. It’s like the Ellen DeGeneres issue - he coaches the Olympic team and they always say nice shit about him, but they’re already rich and at the top of

For many, many years NJ schools started the Wednesday after Labor Day. Now start dates are all over the place. What hasn’t changed is the two days off in early November for the NJEA convention in Atlantic City. That has been for. ever.

Super cutting edge millennial from Tacoma WA and im similarly confused. Class of ‘02 and school always started after Labor day in September.

Normally starting school earlier also means ending earlier. (this year it could mean anything). Colleges started this trend of ending earlier to give their students a perceived advantage in landing jobs. K-12 followed suit because of their numerous ties to college schedules.

I think it’s partly regional. I grew up in Maine (also gen X, graduated in ‘97) where we started in late August or early September, and currently live in MA, and my kids start at the very end of August (and the first couple of weeks are very short). In New England, (most) schools are going to be opening for weeks.

There is no reason to reach under a spandex bra or shorts to apply pressure. None. That coach is a sexual predator and should be arrested. I wonder if he’s working somewhere else?

Is there a college in America that hasn’t abused its athletes? I swear to God, every year its a different college. This s*it is out of hand. I cant imagine how many are kept quiet.

Agree. Was watching my nephew play pee wee football few years back (age 9-11 I think) and couldn’t believe the yelling and screaming the kids were subjected to. My spirit would have been totally crushed if I’d gone through that when I was that age. There’s a better way to do it.

No big loss...

E! and “news” is oxymoronic.

Can the Paul brothers just disappear forever?

Excellent point. They’re willing to shoot themselves in the foot if it means they can feel better than everybody else.

Anecdotally, I can say this isn’t true. Plenty of young, single white women have voted Republican. Usually it’s a belief they picked up about how the undeserving are using their welfare money for free caviar brunches all the time or they come from a fairly sheltered/conservative Christian background. Or sometimes

It’s probably because I was kinda poor as a kid but I’m not afraid of poor people. I get into arguments with my fellow white women coworkers about this every time we have to go to the big city, where there are many homeless. There’s some sort of deep fear of contamination there.

Yeah, “I wouldn’t have said as many mean things about Trump” always seemed like a questionable campaign message for a Democratic primary candidate in 2020.

A long-ass time ago, I stumbled upon a long series of accounts from planned parenthood staff (and unfortunately, I don’t have the link anymore), and a common anecdote was the daughter of picketers... or sometimes the picketers themselves coming in for an abortion, and then going right back to the picket line. I recall

The idea that polls can tell us anything at all in these times is hilarious. The silent majority have long learned to be cautious with their opinions and that caution has turned to paranoia in the face of “cancel culture” . I see Trump winning by a landslide.
