It really is hard to get past the label of being “soft on crime,” even though the war on drugs is an abject failure by every possible metric. There is no medium or larger city in the USA or Canada where, if you want it, you can’t get any illegal drug you want.

That’s the problem here. This man’s rock bottom involves shooting people in the forehead when he robs them, we know that many addicts relapse many times before getting sober, so this mans relapse potential will always involve him killing innocent people.

Drug addiction really does need to be treated as a medical problem. I imagine a lot could be gained from diverting funds from incarceration to treatment and rehab.
