Let's throw a bit more dirt on that casket - while they got nominated, both Ingmar Bergman and Akira Kurosawa were likewise given the brush by the Academy.
Bergman got three wins for best foreign language film and for Kurosawa's part, Ran got a costuming award. That's about it.

'no noticeable flaws'

I suppose now's a bad time to point out that Robert Downey Jr's nomination for Tropic Thunder would have had a good fighting chance were he not going up against a dead man.

"Precisely 74 percent of you shall die, Gettys! SEVENTY-FOUR PERCENT!"

The sad part being, it was his Avengers incarnation that really made his popularity soar, so expect that to likely be the new face of Loki from here out.

Four words - Mask of the Phantasm. Yeah, it's animated. Suck it up. It's one of the better takes on Batman we've gotten in a theatrical release.

Honestly, he's not even that good in The Social Network.
He's not bad at least, but overall he's one of the weaker elements of the movie. The material's good enough he doesn't really bring it down.

He's kind of walking down the same road as Al Pacino and Christopher Walken, where it's less acting, more 'shtick.'

"I haven't seen Jaws: The Revenge. But I have seen the house that it bought me, and that's nice."

The optimism element of TDK is kind of prevalent in the whole trilogy. Like the Joker himself puts it best, the Nolan Batman films are ultimately about Batman fighting for Gotham's soul.

Well, it's not bad…
But it's no "Oscar Gold"

Even if not for the 'big' awards, can we at least agree Snowpiercer would have had a good fighting chance in makeup/costuming/cinematography?

Prior to awards night, I was all set to see Extremely Loud as the Academy setting up their 'Sorry for all those times we ignored you' award to Max von Sydow.

I've been suspecting the Weinsteins used their influence to shut it out after how audiences and critics backed Bong Joon-Ho when they wanted to edit his film.

Kate Winslet winning for The Reader. One of the best meta-jokes in the Academy's history that they don't even realize they were the butt of.

I'd argue that accessibility point.
Especially when you have a series like Monster, which in terms of plot and cast could arguably compete with a lot of live action fare over here.
Hell, its printed form garnered a good deal of critical hype. The show could have been a hit had SyFy actually known how the Hell to market

They gave them a whole episode, but it fell flat with viewers because of how little time actually got spent on them as characters. Even here a lot of show-only people were underwhelmed because the show really hasn't bothered to do much with the likes of Pyp, Grenn, and Dolorous Edd.

As additional bonus, it was regarded as good enough by the people working on the comic to lead them to re-evaluate (and in some cases bus in) several characters from the animated canon.
We have TAS to thank for the creation of Rene Montoya and Harley Quinn, as well as giving Mr. Freeze a HUGE do-over from being just a

I'd argue MAYBE polish some of the dialogue up. Doesn't need a complete rewrite, mind you, but some of the dialogue in the early eps could get pretty damn clunky, even without the acting.

Don't forget Pyp and Gren.
Who, sadly, a lot of people forget because Benioff and Weiss seem to dislike the Night's Watch as much as the rest of the Realm does.
