My cousin moved from PA to Charleston, SC and loves it. He’s always posting photos on the beach, boating, etc. 

Are you looking for sunny skies or moody fog?

I did just that!  It took a lot longer than I thought because the universe has no respect for my plans. Thus far, it has been worth every roadblock.  Go for it.  I ended up in Atlantic Canada in a very sleepy beach town.  It’s divine. 

The Redneck Riviera is a bit more reasonable than the east coast of Florida, but it’s just filled with white people vacationing from Alabama and Georgia. But maybe that’s your thing. There is a small town there called Grayton Beach that is more artsy and cute. It was pretty awesome when I went there almost 30 years…

I live nearby the beach off the main land and I adore where we love BUT we have seen a huge increase of people moving down here. Every little spot that can be built on is being developed. It’s kinda sad as this used to be a somewhat quiet sleepy area. The island used to be seasonal with visitors and usually very busy…

I understand that Georgia and Alabama have lovely coasts along the Gulf. And I completely understand your desire to be near the water. It was nonnegotiable for me when I moved to have a view like this:

I hear that Key West is very pedestrian friendly. And you can rent a bike if the mood strikes. Also, polydactyl cats, gorgeous sunsets, and the best Cuban sandwiches outside of Cuba.

That sounds lovely. I can’t help—I’m in southern Ontario and “sleepy beach town” here means something different.  But I kind of want to move north and get the hell away from everything--maybe be on the water. I won’t, unless there’s no way of going back to the classroom for, oh, ten more years.  But it sounds tempting.

That sounds fun.  I don’t know much about the East Coast beach towns, but in CA I would think maybe a place like Ojai would fit the bill. 

If you were very eager to get away from your current circumstances and start over in a sleepy beach town, where would you go? Are there any affordable, walkable places with things to do on the East or Gulf coast? Maybe I should just move to Florida.
