Particularly because Obama has consistently displayed a pretty high degree of pop culture literacy. There's really no reason to doubt that he still engages with this stuff.

absolutely not
Really well-written. Plenty of horror movies traffic in absurd “retellings” of “true” stories, but this one seemed to cross a couple lines into the wrong kind of exploitation.
Tatiana came out blasting with the good Star Wars takes and I love it. The prequels still suck, and the meme-driven attempt at reappraising them sucks, too. Excited for this show, though — Ewan did nothing wrong.
“What is it you need to be told by television?”
... a compelling story?
Totally agree with this take. The reveal is broadly emblematic of what keeps The Boys in B- or C-level popcorn fare rather than the higher-quality ranks of superhero shows like Watchmen or Legion: The Boys simply doesn’t have anything to say. It’s just vague ramblings about “the man” in a high-budget desaturated…
What happens if you sub, buy Mulan, unsub, and later resub? Will you have access to Mulan again?
Much respect for going for the STATION! headline instead of the low-hanging fruit of “Excellent!” and “Party on, dudes!” Bogus Journey doesn’t get enough love.
Yes, I think corporate social responsibility is a good thing to reward.
I think you might have overlooked the part where I mentioned the comedy punching up, not down; that’s definitely a work in progress, but newer editions of the game are more progressive and take aim at power structures rather than disenfranchised groups. Obviously it’s still mean-spirited at times, but I think it’s…
I agree! It really seems like the bulk of the antipathy towards the game stems from people realizing their friends aren’t as funny as they thought (e.g. the people who always just pick the grossest card, regardless of context -- you can definitely guess that, but it isn’t fun, it’s just boring). If you play with kind,…
Just a gentle reminder to commenters that Cards Against Humanity is an extremely progressive, charitable company that supports lots of awesome causes and has been making a very active, vocal effort to encourage humor that “punches up, not down.” (And IMO, the game itself is very fun as long as you play with the right…
Normally I’d take any opportunity to boost Venture Bros. (my favorite animated show!) but in this case, it has fewer seasons (7 vs. 9) and literally half the episodes (81 vs. 163) of Bob’s Burgers. Definitely has the time-on-air advantage, though.
I almost took your post seriously until I saw that you’re excited for the Simpsons renewal and called Bob’s Burgers “too quirky and twee to be true comedy, good sirs.”
I feel like Bob’s Burgers doesn’t get lauded enough. More or less consistent quality across nine seasons, doesn’t rely on asshole characters for its humor, and is generally wholesome and woke. (Congrats, Family Guy, on not making gay jokes any more — Bob’s Burgers had an episode positively featuring trans sex workers…
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find this! It’s a miniseries so short it’s shorter than most of the films on this list, and it’s absolutely the thing that captures the spirit of fall — that’s basically the whole pitch of the thing.
Who let you out of The_Donald?
I’ve been taking down my favorite lines from the show (just finished), and “He didn’t know how the poop got into the Vonnegut piñata!” is at the top of the list. Just a perfect line, delivered beautifully.
Seriously considering unfollowing AVClub because of this article. This is probably a major twist. Fucking shameful.
You have it listed as “The Horrible Hospital,” but it’s “The Hostile Hospital.”
