The manual transmissions will last forever. Its the autos that are lucky to survive 150k miles.

As a former e46 owner (my brother still drives one) there are a few things behind this.
Prime example of the dichotomy between cars that stick around and reliable cars are Land Rovers. I still regularly see Range Rovers and Discos of about every generation and it sure as hell isn’t because they are reliable.
Some of this is also regional. I remember being shocked to see so many 80s Toyotas when I spent some time in Califorina. Here in Ohio, they all rusted out in the early 2000s.
And ability. Country Joe will throw a used junkyard engine in his 88 chevy for $300 on the weekend or crimp a set of replacement brake lines for his rusted out dodge. Meanwhile, when Suburban Sally gets the quote for $2,000 for new brake lines on her 10 year newer Toyota she’ll junk the thing.
You are completely missing the point. If the driver did this WITHOUT autopilot, it would obviously be his fault (albeit less egregiously so because of the poor lane markings). But Geoff is saying that, with autopilot on, the driver couldn’t have reacted in time.
Ok, I’m about the biggest defender of autopilot out there, but why is everyone jumping to blame the driver here?!? By the time that guy would have realized autopilot wasn’t going to swerve it would have been pretty much too late to correct.
There’s really nothing wrong with all seasons in certain situations. My Pilot Super Sport A/S test not too far off of their summer equivalents but last longer and still work fine in the kind of weather we get most often in the winter. Sure, I have to drive carefully on snow-covered roads, but that happens a handful of…
Came here to say this
Hahah I had this one happen to me. Was a nightmare to diagnose. Only on a german car can a failed thermostat cause electrical problems with the ECU.
The only reason this issue exists at all is because car manufacturers want to make money by restricting auto headlights to higher trims. I’m sure every car made today had auto headlights as an option and it’s probably all of $5 in parts to include. IMO this should be legally required on all cars just like other safety…
For anyone who hasn’t driven one, the transmission is really really bad. Like not “I like manuals I hate autos they all suck” bad, but “my girlfriend who knows nothing about cars thought something was broken with the engine” bad. It’s like riding in the car with someone who is just learning to drive a stick. Except…
Thanks for posting. This (along with a few of the comments) reminded me of the similar issue with the Jeep Grand Cherokee which I was seriously considering buying. Guess its time to start shopping for X5s and Range Rovers...
A lot of people in the business world (me included) intentionally leave the “sent from my iPhone” signature on as a way of saying “sorry for the brief response, I’m currently on my phone and not at my desk” to those they respond to
You act like a dealer license is just an easy box to check off. In Michigan I’m sure it is, but here in Ohio it requires a ton of work (property requirements, etc etc). I’ve always been wary of “curbstoners” but I’m also not going to immediately assume that just because the guy is trying to get around Ohio’s onerous…
I’ll never buy a Mazda again because of the rust. Bought my protege in high school because it was a fun car but supposedly had the whole cheap reliable Japanese aspect. My 2003 Protege with 60k miles turned out to be way more unreliable than my 99 BMW with 200k miles purely because of rust. I literally had my sway bar…
“by a piece of crap truck” hahhahaha you own an e38. I see 740i’s go for under 3k on craigslist daily. That F150 is probably worth twice what your car is worth. As a BMW driver and bimmerforums member/contributor, I cringed seeing such a douche bring bimmerforums to the front page of jalopnik.
I've never actually been in a Tesla store but that is definitely not how an apple store works. The want people to come play with their new iPads even if they have no intention of buying.
This article acts like "reliability" is just the longevity of the car.
I see nothing wrong with the e46. They are pretty much past their deprecation cycle, so you don't have to worry about excessive milage killing the value of their car. Moderately good gas mileage (plus with today's $3/gallon gas, this is less of an issue than it was a year ago). Fun in the turns, but still smooth on…
