He probably sees most of the problems of his administration as unfortunate incidents beyond his control. He probably only considers a few minor, subsidiary issues to be actual “mistakes” and he likely sees them as part of the normal up-and-down of a Presidency.

Well, the reason the guy is a long shot candidate is that the whole “roots” portion of the “grass roots” movement isn’t really strong enough to actually drive a candidate to power. If you say that the “grass” portion represents actual results, then the analogy would follow that you need to nourish your roots.
