@SuperMary: Mass effect is not a FPS. Its a 3rd person shooter, not first person. First person implies you see via the eyes of the character (doom, bioshock, halo, call of duty).

LOL, it has almost nothing to do with 'the envisioned User Interface' and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that there is a growing movement with PC developers that create cross platform games to limit or prevent PC gamepad use for their PC variants. Developing a simple controller UI is too simple not to be done.
