Not selfish, IMO. When you’re good at something it’s hard to suspend disbelief when you see it totally botched by Hollywood. My Dad used to get pissed at Spaghetti Western movies all the time for getting things wrong historically speaking, especially the guns. It’s not a new thing to expect excellence from a story…
You know, that’s a fine point to make to someone who is not of the SF world per se, but has an interest. There is a cultural understanding among those in SF fandom to whom your point would make immediate sense too. I’d encourage zuludeady to read “The Glass Hinged Jaw” or really any book of essay’s about SF by Delany…
Hey, now we’re talking. Can you recommend a good layman’s book on both the subject of Linguistics and a good intro layman’s book on the known history of Indo-Europeans? I find this topic fascinating.
Really, that’s the thing that kills it for you? No worries, poorly done martial arts kills it for me the same way. The short story is excellent, and can be found online free:
Someone in the graphics department wanted a foreground element for the image, they had a million choices, and they made that one. They should have played the lottery that day. Looks like Hong Kong has internet outrage culture too.
Yep, I’m with you on that, we know Hwood can kill a beautiful thing, the ego’s of these stars alone could be poison.
They made a movie out of a Ted Chiang story. I had no freak’n idea this was being made but it totally makes my day, and I love his work, and I hope it’s a smashing success. Mr. Chiang, please write more stories.
I agree with you totally, please bring adults back to the cinema, and to the process of making good cinema. I did not like “Ex Machina” but regardless it is a solid representation of your very good point, as are the other flicks you mentioned. SF, much like “Literature” has the potential to explore very big questions…
That’s because 90's video games used animation for cut scenes.

What a wonderful use of gesture, and expression, these images are delightful.
Amazingly, I find that to be an ASMR trigger.
Sooth, I was thinking that to combat the fact that thieves learn how to hack around any physical protective system eventually, it should also shoot out daggers, or maybe a flamethrower type thing.
In 24 years Michael will be leading an army of sandworms to crush the A.I. Overlords trying to rule the world from China, no more time for swimming!
Regardless of that, the science and “the liberals” can see that trouble is coming and must be prepared for in regards to climate change and global warming. You lose, “the liberals” win.
Canoeiong, CANOEING! STFU and kiss Michaels feet! He could win the 1000 meter butterfly with a a goddamn canoe tied to his left foot!
Wrong, keep showing it, the blood and guts drama of water polo is all the hits, kicks, tricks, and fouls that happen under water. They’ve been filming WP underwater for ages, and people still marvel at the amazing level of poor sportsmanship that is a baseline requirement to play the game effectively.
How sad that the “Potter” films producers avoided the ingenuity of the Plays superior interpretation in regards to Hermione’s race. What a great opportunity for inclusiveness totally missed by the film world, yet again.
She can be awesome, fully independent, amazing, and in love. Love is a defining characteristic of many fine and well adjusted people, be they heroes, or lowly IT experts who wish they could just write science fiction for a living and suddenly find they’re in mid life. Oh, sorry, went off the rails there.
