It's hard to explain. But there are certain jobs that are "acceptable" and certain others that are "worthy of derision" and are given to certain characters simply to be a source of jokes. And Ross was often the butt of nerd-like jokes. And they are the jobs that people associated with people who can't "get a life".

They don't necessarily need to be depicted on the show, but it's like every character's entire social life consists of the other characters.
