Some people like having fixed irons even when using an optic. Remember, on a nearly zero parallax optic like an Aimpoint or an Eotech, so long as you can see the reticle (even if from your point of view, the reticle is ‘hovering’ outside of the optic) you will hit what the dot is on.

If mounted correctly, he would have no problem looking through the optic. Eotechs have (almost) zero parallax, no matter where in the optic the reticle is, the rounds will go.
