IMO, when a writer wants to make a big life change for a character the only question the publisher should ask is "will it make the book better?"

I think it's the other way around. Robo starts getting all "free willy" and the OCP execs are all "he's out of our control...what do we do???" So the new version of bad guy Dick Jones says "let's go full robot so we can be in control!! Ha,ha,ha!!(evil laugh). Of course this is part of his master plan of controlling…
