If you read the whole thing, you'll see that he's not particularly eloquent in written form. I don't think he was referring to The Wire and The Sopranos when he said "Many shows are written…", he was referring to "many shows". As in, most mainstream shows. It's just a stilted sentence.
I watched all 4 seasons of Breaking Bad for the first time over the course of 10 days in October. Probably the best week and a half of my life.
