I would imagine the cost of ownership (fuel, maintenance, tires etc) would be about the same between a 986 and 996. How about 2004 Boxster S going for $15k. That is a lot of mid engine Porsche style for the cost of a base model Honda Fit. Maintenance will drain the kids college fund, but who says community college isn't just as good as private school anyway...?

What is funny is that the 1st gen Insight is not only one of the most efficient cars on the market, but they can also be had for cheap. The 2000 model pictured above recently sold on ebay for $7k. So you save $20k off the price of a new Prius right off the bat...things only get better from there...
