It’s what I like to call the “Goonies Effect.” It came out when a lot of people were young, they liked it then, and now have nostalgic affection for it that covers up the film’s glaring flaws.

Yeah the two lead teen characters are really not well-written or acted. Thora Birch as the little sister is leagues better.

It doesn’t really matter what particular words you would use when talking about masterpieces.

It’s on my Netflix queue!

There are scores of photos on the internet from the Poltergeist shoot where Spielberg is clearly directing the action. Just yesterday I saw a photo of the famous “you didn’t move the bodies!” scene in an op-ed for James Karen. Who was working the blocking with Karen and Craig Nelson? Spielberg. ...probably, judging by the reviews.

Not to mention The Age of Innocence (‘93), Casino (‘95), After Hours (‘85), The Last Temptation of Christ (‘87)...

Wolf of Wall Street is in Scorsese’s top five, IMO.

Silence was in 2016.

The worst film Scorsese has made in the past 15 years is Shutter Island, which was still a massive box office success that’s atmospheric, chilling, and effective up until the anticlimactic ending.

Yeah those movies were much better than your “junk ball” analogy. Scorsese’s “fast ball” still tops 100.

Yep. It also does more than that.

Neil Casey did a good job with that character’s self-obsessed victim mentality. I thought he was actually scary. There are millions of guys like that out there.

Yeah I responded positively to the overstuffed nature of this movie. Wasn’t it the most expensive movie ever made at the time? Dang thing better be overstuffed!

The butler is in Spider-Man 2, just in a much smaller role.

The “creation of Sandman sequence” - where we start on one grain of sand that moves to become the full villain - is one of the best uses of CGI in movie history. The music is also top-notch.
