Um, Ryan collapsed in front of Miller’s grave in front of his family. He’s clearly never gotten over what happened to him. And I don’t know where you’re getting “basically concludes he’s ‘earned it...’.” He asks his wife, in a manner that shows he has no confidence in an affirmative answer, if he has indeed achieved…

I think there’s real heart in Lebowski - his relationship with Walter and Donny, the budding friendship/whatever that develops with Maude - but it is hidden under the constant absurdity.
