I thought Waltz was excellent, but it’s pretty clear the Academy gravitated to him because 1.) his character wasn’t a controversial, terrifying monster and 2.) lingering goodwill from Basterds.

I thought Allen acquitted himself well in the movie, but it’s clearly Denzel’s show.

So the general narrative coalescing around this one is that it’s Spike’s best since 25th Hour? This review, even with the paragraph describing perceived shortcomings, makes this movie sound like a big deal.

He Got Game wasn’t particularly “messy,” if I remember correctly. I also think that’s one of Lee’s best.

Clockers is quite good.

I would submit Tarkin as a candidate for “most underrated movie bad guy of all time.” People forget that he’s actually the chief antagonist of Episode IV, with Vader as his lieutenant. Tarkin even orders Vader around a few times in the movie!

I think you could also argue Samuel L. Jackson gives the best performance in the movie. That one is loaded with instant-classic acting.

One of the most hateful (and unsympathetic) characters in movie history. QT has even said that, out of all the characters he’s created, Candie is the one he hates most (even over Landa!).

I didn’t know MacLachlan was capable of playing the Scariest Person in the World. In the beginning of The Return, I thought he reminded me of Anton Chigurh. But I quickly realized that Mr. C is far scarier and more dangerous than Chigurh ever was.

It’s held up the best of any of Michael Mann’s more recent output.

Sullivan is conflicted, but ultimately weak and self-interested above all.

I’d argue it’s better than Caddyshack. Stronger script for sure.
