Well, whenever you see anything like that, a wizard did it!

The preferred spelling of "wiener" is W-I-E-N-E-R. Although E-I is an acceptable ethnic variant!

The only other big-budget Hollywood version I'm aware of is one from the 1970s with Jason Robards as Brutus and Charlton Heston as Antony. It's terrible.

They filmed the Tennant version and you can get it on itunes! I highly recommend it — Richard II is my favorite play (I wrote my dissertation on depictions of him in the 1590s) and Tennant's Richard is the best I've ever seen.

Well, it's been done pretty much since Shakespeare actually wrote them.

And doesn't seem to have died in poverty!

Also, in the book it's based on, Raoul is impotent from being shot in the nuts. And then they didn't even put that into the musical!

King John is a really good play, though — it just has a reputation for being The Shakespeare Play Nobody Reads and that's hard to shake. But, like all of Shakespeare's histories (both English and Roman), there's a lot of thematic stuff about leadership and legitimacy that speaks to the present moment.

I don't care! There's still butter and meatloaf!

Wow!

Hey, I'm one of those too! I teach high school now but it's not the same. Plus you have to deal with parents.

Sophia Myles could be the third sister!

YES. I was like "oh, that sounds so nice!"

I dunno, I feel like everyone has their limits and it doesn't seem all that implausible that even someone who's been unsympathetic heretofore might be brought up short by being asked to brutally kill someone you actually know. Especially if they're as fucked up as Janine is.

Imagine having Serena Joy as a mom. *shudders uncontrollably*

I'm a regular watcher of GoT and the amputation scene was way worse for me. Quick sword-based violence is a lot easier to watch than slow, precise surgical procedures.

That scene got to me worse than anything they've ever shown on Game of Thrones.

I assume it's a reference to the biblical passage that goes, roughly, "if thy right hand offend thee, chop it off," because it's better to lose a single part than have one's whole body thrown into hell. (It was clearly his left hand, given the wedding ring shot, but still.)

The RSC is doing a Roman season right now and they do a terrific job with A&C — I saw it in Stratford a couple of months ago and it was aces. Apparently their production of Julius Caesar is even better, but I couldn't make that one work with my schedule.

Oh, I'm just irrationally attached to Richard II. No need to apologize!
