I would’ve normally expected a post on the attack itself within a few hours, and then a follow up later about the suspects.…

It really does. Even if it was mentioned, it still an event that happened in Spain and has brought a lot of suffering. Plus with so many deaths in Spain in something that just happened today, that you first instinct is too go “Islamophobia” “USA” is kind of gross imo.

No. “Wherever they want” is obviously a wrong and stupid way to interpret that. The vast majority of populated space is obviously unavailable to all protests. I absolutely am defending their right to protest in public spaces. And I absolutely reject efforts by the state to force protests out of those spaces.

The primary (and important) distinction between the Confederate statues and the other Americans you listed, is that only the Confederates waged a treasonous war against the U.S. in defense of their right to own people, and then lost that war.
