Can I just say as a counter example that I found Bungie to have possibly the best launch for an online centric game I've ever played. Bought it on day one and I was stunned at how there were absolutely no problems with server stress for my entire first week on PS4.

For random drops the only good stuff is at the Raid and the Exotic bounties. Everything else is easier and faster to buy. Sometimes you'll also get lucky with the Nightfall, which is the very first thing you should do each week anyway.

the loot system has improved dramatically since 1.0.2. Don't know which game you are playing. If you are having trouble grind out some Vanguard rep and buy gear at the tower, definitely the intended and preferred way to get gear since I stopped going for random engram drops.

I'd recommend packing along very stable Void Machine guns and sniper rifles so you can hold them off and cover each other from a distance. There will also be a handful of goblins.
