I remember reading this and so many other similar stories and thinking: “Why aren’t those stupid people arrested for wasting police time?”

at lunch today i overheard a gay kid extensively detailing his relationship with a man who was in marriage counseling with a woman and had three kids. marriage for appearances is still all over the place. so many guys just feel the pressure to maintain two lives. the stories i hear from my gay friends about the amount

honestly I wish my great uncle, who my middle name is named after, had a person like Rodgers in his life. I hear I take a lot after him, and I would have liked to meet him. but unfortunately the reality of the time got to him and he took his own life.

In reality, the entire show would have been shut down, and Congress would have used it as an excuse to revoke PBS funding.

As an avid fan of history, this is fascinating stuff! It also really gets into how history is in many ways an [educated] guessing game...you have to rely on documents and other primary sources, but a lot of that is dependent on who wrote it and what they wrote, so it can leave big gaps in modern knowledge.

It’s cautionary tale hair. Those of us with pink complexions should tape it to the mirror for those random days when we think “why not blonde?”

You see Hathaway looking unnatural as a blond. I see a specific aesthetic choice to put her in an unnatural Barbie hair color to create tension when she’s onscreen or to allude to something intrinsically mismatched in her character.

Literally five years ago, in 2012, my daughter’s Girl Scout troop had some sort of organizational meeting with several troops while the girls were in another room doing an activity, and a mother from another troop stood up and said that she heard that one of the girls—a sixth grader—was a lesbian, and that she didn’t

As everybody in Pittsburgh well knows, Mr. Rogers was what you saw. There are no skeletons, he may be the lone popular culture public figure who is simply unimpeachable.

He did pragmatically admit the reality of the situation. If he kept going out to gay bars, he’d get outed and fired. That was the reality and completely out of Roger’s hands.

This. I’m old enough to remember that until 1969, the men arrested in police nuisance raids of gay bars would have their names published in the daily newspaper, often resulting in losing jobs. Rogers wasn’t rejecting him - he was looking out for him (and the show). Also worth noting that the marriage-for-appearances

I agree that you can’t call this homophobia on Rogers part (imho). He didn’t reject Clemmons, quite the opposite. He did pragmatically admit the reality of the situation. If he kept going out to gay bars, he’d get outed and fired. That was the reality and completely out of Roger’s hands. The ending of the article in

I have seen a couple of sites trying to make a fuss out of this and say that homophobia was some sort of skeleton in Fred Rogers’ closet. But that is really judging people of half a century ago by the morality of today. It is amazing that Clemmons wasn’t fired. Gay people (especially men) around children was regarded

I’m not crying, you’re crying.

On the show, he would say, “I love you just the way you are.” One day I said, “Fred, were you talking to me?” And he looked at me and he said, “Yes, I’ve been talking to you for two years and you finally heard me today.” And I just collapsed into his arms. I started crying. That’s when I knew I loved him.

Frankly I miss the Weekly World News. If you’re going to just make shit up you might as well go big.

Apparently Newsweek wants to become the go-to magazine for people who find The National Enquirer too challenging a read.

My detailed analysis is as follows: a bunch of fucking assholes bought the Newsweek brand, and put their fucking asshole editorial slant on it.
