I disagree completely. It was played up to be revenge, but he loved Buffy as much as a soulless monster could. Spike wanted redemption. The flashbacks to him killing his mother, his guilty anger being reminded about killing Principal Wood’s mom, etc.

I just replied to someone else about how Xander is the worst. And the cherry on the Xander is horrifying sundae was his dumbass comment in the finale upon finding out that Anya was dead.
