I believe they could share the same habitat, probably indefinitely. Elephants and mammoths are very closely related, it would be comparable to having Asian elephants and African elephants in together. Of course some individuals would be incompatible but that would not be an insurmountable problem.

They would likely be able to socialize with captive elephants, there is no reason why they could not have happy lives and if enough specimens are procured, enough fertile animals could be created to make a breeding population.
