She did have a mask. The same one that appears with her helmet. Seems to auto-appear as part of the suit. It comes on when they are underwater at the beginning and later on when in space. It even “glows” around her lower jaw/mouth when it first appears, then turns invisible. So some sort of force field thingy I guess…

I am open to be corrected but I think they invented Flerkins for the movie. Never saw them in the comics.
And my personal theory is that they are hidden shapeshifters, so other than the Skrulls they try to look like harmless animals or objects (think D&D treasure chest monsters or maneating cabinets) and this one loves…
