But both parties want to discourage third party runs because generally speaking it hurts their chances of winning if a third party candidate who shares some of their ideology runs. It hurts the Republican party if Trump runs third party, just as it hurts them if he gets the most votes but doesn’t get the nomination.

If they’d use supers or something similar to screw over Trump not only would it guarantee a loss in November, but a possibly permanent fracture in the party. Yeah, nominating Trump is bad, but screwing him over if he got the most votes would have done way more damage.

But these delegates haven’t voted yet. It’d be like if they called everyone who lived in a small state that didn’t vote until July, asked who they were voting for, and then gave those delegates away according to their poll.
