The US military might actually be one of the most transparent and equitable places in the country in terms of pay. Yes, you can make persuasive arguments that women may face social barriers and have historically been excluded from some access to extra pay (for combat roles). On the whole though, pay is based on

FUN FACT: If you’re a dude and do a FAFSA for college aid they register you for selective service.

This. I’d actually prefer compulsory service with very limited medical exceptions to an all volunteer army because at least that means the war hawks have skin in the game.

Surely you’re not for one class of people being forced into the military out of financial hardship and all the burden placed on them while the sons of Congressmen and billionaires and CEOs skate away.

I might be, but Rachel Maddow made a pretty convincing argument that the fact that there really aren’t drafts any more is leading to more war. If you have this volunteer force that you can send off and you put the financial cost on a credit card, there’s no pain to the general population. They make internet comments

Minorities are and poor people are overly represented in the military. Avoiding military conflict is usually reserved for the weathly and privileged.

Except the disparate numbers of women and men likely contribute to the sexual assault issues, under an equal draft system a dramtic increase in the number of women mat very well lead to a decrease in such issues. It’s a lot harder to marginalise and ‘other’ individuals when they are just like 50% of your army. Not

Registering for the draft is not enlisting. Every male has to register, but the military would never actually draft someone who is blind. It’s amazing that half the country is completely ignorant about how the draft works.

I am opposed to the draft, period. But IF young men are required to register when they turn 18 (which, again, I believe they should not be), then young women should, as well.

If we make women sign up for selective service, it will deprive the MRAs of whinging point.

My friend Kim smokes very rarely, but when we were in Las Vegas, she wanted a pack for the weekend and told me to go pick her up a pack of “Bitch Sticks” and when I was like, “Wha?” she said “Parliaments or Marlboro Lights”... and that’s what I call them. I tend to gravitate towards Marlboro over Camels.

Many years ago, there was an article in NY Mag about what kind of person smokes each brand of cigarettes. At the time, I smoked Parliaments, and NY Mag informed me that I may or may not be a Russian hooker.

He looks like what I call a little guy with a big secret, my first husband was one. (in his pants, is where the big secret is)

Lucy Worsley tweeted that The Sun reported this as:

I’m Gen X, and we had it much better than today’s young people do. I had no problem getting a good job right out of college with just an English major. It’s not that easy anymore.

Hmm.. I wonder who should have taught us that... Maybe boomers?

Okay, but can reporting on this story PLEASE emphasize that the camp is located on unceded treaty land? Not only are they being ordered to leave, but they’re being ordered to leave land that actually belongs to them.

The thing is.....generations are big, big groups of people and both of those can be true. In this individual’s anecdata, for every annoying acquaintance I know in the former ‘how does adult’ camp, I know a lot that are smart, hardworking people with advanced degrees, struggling to find meaningful jobs. Is two months at the VA really a life’s work? I’ve interned at places longer.

Except this person has no idea as to whether or not they will be asked to do odious things yet. Hell, they have almost no VA experience to date (two months on the job).
