I wouldn’t depend on a trap door. It requires either cutting a big hole in the floor without sacrificing a bunch of rigidity or making the door structural and hoping that you can un-latch it after the chassis has been deformed by a wreck.

I think the idea is to limit the size of objects striking the driver to a less injurious range. Also, the center blade is only a visual problem for one eyed drivers, who I believe are a slight minority.

I’m liking the Mercedes halo. It’s about aero neutral and doesn’t turn the cockpit into an oven. If they design the mounting points to release forward, it should be able to deflect the most likely impacts while still being easy to rip off if they need more room to get the driver out.

Yes and no. A full polycarbonate canopy turns the cockpit into a solar oven. So a bunch of the power saved on aero gets spent keeping the driver cool enough to not die.
