yeah those are "limb arrestors". They work pretty well on forest trails with small, low-hanging branches. Obviously, they are not terribly effective with the big ones.

My roof rack has a seperate area in the front built specifically for holding jerry cans (see picture). Obviously, these will come out if I roll over - but then that will be the least of my worries. Not my Landcruiser in the pic, but similar.
