Why are you talking about lack of ram? That has nothing to do with why consoles are made with a specific hardware set and games are made for that specific hardware set. It's been that way since the inception of consoles to keep it simple for the consumer.

There is a massive gulf betweenBC on consoles, where games are made for a specific set of hardware that to some degree has to be carried over in the design of the next console; and playing old games on PC, where games are made for a variety of system configurations.

I think Sony shot themselves in the foot by offering backwards compatibility on ps2. It's not practical to include this feature as previous gens get more advanced, but now everyone expects it and it's become a purchasing factor for many.
