I wish I could get more exited about Wild Dog but I'm worried the show will find a way to screw him up. They've already changed his name for no apparent reason.

It does. It gets somewhat better in season 2 but it really starts growing the beard halfway through season 3. I'd recommend watching the Mortis arc (Season 3, Episode 15-17) and the Umbara arc (Season 4, Episode 7-10) before giving up on it.
