I've had decent luck so far with the very few companies I deal with online. That said, I and always make sure to confirm either very explicitly clear language in policies, or discussion with an actual human that I won't be spammed or sold out.

I've been going through Amazon's privacy and marketing policies over and over for months, wondering if I should order something (okay, several somethings). Their policies make it sound like they'd respect the opt-out, but what you just said disturbs me.

Cops are human too, and that sort of mistake is easily explainable to a judge all-too-ready to understand. Discerning discrepancies and making findings on them is part and parcel of a judge's job anyway.
