it’s interesting you bring that up because Duo was originally intended to be the Protagonist of Wing.

that’s not entirely true. the toy sales are definitely important because that’s how these shows make money. but Tomino wasn’t making a show to sell toys, he just wanted to make a good show about the horrors of war and he bucked the demands from the toy companies at ever turn but didn’t always win.
I have seen very few Gundam series, but 08th MS Team is definitely my favorite. I still watch that Gouf fight from time to time. Speaking of which...
Agree. I’ve arrived late into Gundam, but I watched 8th MS on Hulu and really enjoyed it.
Gundam Wing was a show I thought was brilliant at 15 and recognize as an adult was bonkers and not as deep or complex as it was clearly trying to be.
when they aired Iron-Blooded Orphans on Toonami they recreated the Gundam Wing Promo.
08th MS team was such a great pocket story of the larger war, it felt more raw and somehow real. This a great pick . . .
This is more than fair to point out; but since Rob opened up that loophole I felt the gang would be disappointed if I didn’t exploit it.

Cowboy Bebop was in-fact the very first anime ever shown on Adult Swim. It wasn’t broadcast as part of Toonami until 2012
Gundam was the first big franchise that never had a foothold in the states but blew up thanks to Toonami. DBZ and Sailor Moon had been syndicated on various local networks, but that Peter Cullen narrated promo for Gundam Wing single-handedly spawned a brand new fanbase I can confidently say propelled Sunrise to new…
The irony is, Star Trek HAD moved past Kirk, and VERY successfully at that. TNG came into its own after Gene got kicked upstairs and the show was allowed to find its own voice. And while we got a few appropriate continuity nods, (plus one very well-done love-letter episode for the series’ anniversary) DS9 and Voyager…
I wish the recent iterations of Star Trek and Star Wars shows would find their own voice instead of always linking back Kirk and Luke Skywalker. It’s as if Kirk and Skywalker are the only stories worth telling in their respective universe.
Man these writers have no original ideas. Time travel? Check. Mirror/fascist universe? Check. Borg? Check.
In the flashback, I got the hint that Gwyn is actually a clone, which makes the Diviner even more evil in that he sets up these heartstrings on her.
The Earth of 2024 was in incredibly dire straits in the Star Trek timeline. Many countries faced violent conflict and civil unrest, but America in particular took a turn towards a totalitarian decline in the period, wracked with severe economic crises, homelessness, and rapidly rising unemployment levels.
So what was his answer?
I appreciated your reviews. I love Trek, and I like this show enough to watch every week. I always feel some way after an episode and these reviews helped me sort out what I felt and why. I understand what I love (and don’t love) about Trek much better than I used to, which is pretty cool.
I’ve appreciated Handlen’s Discovery reviews. They remind me of “classic” A.V. Club - in depth, and actually critical. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of the folks still watching this show would prefer fanboy patter.
