I think his bringing Malcolm back in the book (with some really hack explanation) is pretty strong evidence that he wrote it specifically to be a sequel to the movie, not a sequel to the book. I think that's in line with what you're saying, but saying that he didn't write it specifically to be adapted sounds kind of
