Here’s the thing. If Gawker had done nothing wrong, all of the proxy lawsuits in the world wouldn’t have sunk Gawker. The thing is, they did... they went to court... they lost.
Fuck Gawker and fuck Nick Denton. They’ve done and defended shitty, despicable things, and there should be consequences for them.
I get the feeling most of the editors at Gawker are very child-like and naive . Somehow they don’t really grasp that posting things on the internet can have real world repercussions.
So facebook hates gawker too now? Damnit I might have to reactivate my facebook account.
So would you be ok if Gawker published a sex tape without your permission? Or one with your mother? I applaud Thiel for standing up against Gawker in this case. Gawker crossed the line and is reaping the consequences.
“Tomorrow Thiel could wake up, decide he hates Brits, and destroy The Guardian.”
A billionaire funded a successful lawsuit against Gawker. How the lawsuit was funded doesn’t change the fact that Gawker lost. Gawker’s actions, and not Peter Thiel, was the proximate cause of its demise.
lol
This. Gawker didnt lose the lawsuit because he funded it. They lost because they fucking lost.
Good.
Journalistic standards are there to protect news outlets as well as the public. Gawker did not follow them on multiple occasions and got burned. This really has very little to do with Peter Thiel.
Does the funding of lawsuits automatically mean those lawsuits will win? Just curious if you are saying the very lawsuit itself is the problem.
You’re acting like Thiel had a grudge against the Wall Street Journal or something. He went after a libelous two-faced propaganda mill run by a bunch of people that failed out of ethics 101, and deservedly won.
People’s personal lives are not news.
gawker you lost the case stop being so salty. heck I think Facebook shouldn’tdo business with a company that will release someone’s private sex tape.
I find the implication that Thiel’s position on the board was ever in any Jeoprady because of what he did to Gawker highly misleading. The only controversy was the one Gawker tried, and failed, to create.
A better tack for gizmodo, gawker, et al would be to admit defeat, admit that you’ve made mistakes - and own them - and then move the fuck on.
I don’t think “controversy” means “thing we’ve been bitching about despite nobody caring.”
Sorry Gawker, you guys aren’t journalists being wronged. You’re a bunch of unethical muckrakers and you managed to piss off the wrong person...
