It sounds like you don’t go to the movies with poor people. No one wants to bring their too young child to the theater, and those that can afford to just get a baby sitter or have a nanny. Poor people bring their kids to the theater.

I would recommend Witch Hunter Robin for a great starter anime. It is short and self-contained without a huge amount of mythology to have to get. Plus it rocks!
