At one point the Water Tribe twins are bending ice in what looks like the Earth style, stomp the ground ice flys up then punch to shoot it. Does anyone know if this uses a class based system? He seems to indicate point buy systems as bogging down speed so I would assume it uses something similar to classes.

I would say they are vastly different systems with different goals. Champions is super crunchy with tiny rules for a million different possibilities, this is stream lined with a focus on storytelling. So depending on what you are looking for it could be way worse or way better.
