If Pokemon Conquest is to be believed, they simply befriended them instead. they just didn't likely wield the army of pokemon that trainers do using pokeballs.

There's always something magical about co-op gameplay on a couch that online gameplay (even with people you know well) over VOIP just does not capture.

I feel *really* bad for the guys who get stuck with a party of white mages until the second crystal. Holy moly. FFV is many things, but it is far from a nice, easy, forgiving JRPG and certainly has spikes in difficulty that would not be friendly to a party of white mages.
Only open to the US for the time being, but I've certainly been keeping my eye on it.
