I liked Neil Degrasse Tyson talking about that on Nerdist podcast.  He brought up the small problem that if you stopped the spinning of the planet, people would still be traveling at 800 miles an hour.

The beaches near my house don't allow alcohol, and the beauty of a "beach read" is that at any point I can stop and go in the water or pay attention to my kids, without losing track of the story.
