I grew up in the 80's and hated the 80's so...that being said there was also a huge hatred of some aspects of 70's culture now that I think about it (Bell Bottoms/flares, Disco and Polyster...)

Oddly enough, I absolutely see it. As someone who lived through that era (and there were a TON of girls who dressed like Boy George, including one of my first GF) it’s crazy how mind blowing he seemed to us back in the early 80's.
