Well this would be mixing up the roles of studios and distributors, but studios engage in box office prediction about their own and each other's films to manage expectations. Rival studios project high numbers while the studio that owns the film will project more modest ones. We could try to replicate that.

It has to appear on the Wikipedia page, and by their standards it has to have a theatrical release. Sandler/Netflix pictures are TV Movies for our purposes, and ineligible.

That's basically what I had surmised. I have included slight penalties for trading and dropping films. Wanna look over the rules and see if you think I missed anything?

Hmm. What if I add penalties to each of the four specialized positions as well to disincentivize picking poorly suited films? Then we just don't bother with the preset pools but it's on each player to make sure that their chosen films can be fitted into the categories well enough that they think they'll avoid…

Though Episode 8 would be slightly nerfed because anything it earns after December 31st won't count. Under those rules Jurassic World would've actually been the highest earner of 2015, by a couple hundred thousand dollars.
