Pivoting spring loaded contacts in the lower end of the shifter shaft, move the shifter, as it pivots towards neutral, the contacts break and the solenoid allows engine vacuum to actuate a diaphragm, moving the clutch lever and disengaging the clutch

I own a 73 Super Beetle with one ... It’s a little quirky, not real fast, but that’s all beetles too ;) - i am also about to convert to a manual transmission in the spring I believe, I have an offer for mine and would rather swap it before it goes bad as getting some of the parts and someone to repair is more and more…
