I enjoyed IX quite a bit, actually, and I miss "blue" magic in the newer games. I also did enjoy IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, X and X-2. My favorite stories are IV, VIII, IX, and X. My favorite battle systems are V, IX, X-2, and XIII.
