It's farther from a good story than just putting a bow on it. There's good ingredients but the movies basically tell the viewers to take them and cook their own damn dinner because it's going to bed.

Mr. Stay Puft (excluding the miniatures shots) and the Gozer-dogs are terrible. But the proton streams and trap effects still look great, and the ghost affects are the best I've seen in any movie. The way slimer phases through the hotel wall is so good.
